What is a Debutante?

We would like to share some historical background regarding this distinguished occasion. Debutante …a French word which means, “female beginner”, …she is a young lady from an aristocratic or upper class family who has reached the age of maturity, and as a new adult, is introduced to society at a formal presentation known as her “début”. Originally, it meant the young woman was eligible to marry, and part of the purpose was to display her to eligible bachelors and their families with a view to marriage within a select upper class circle. This traditional event varies by region, but is typically referred to as a Debutante ball if it is for a group of debutantes.

A lone debutante might have her own “coming-out party”, or she might have a party with a sister or other close relative. Within the 21st century, Debutantes… are usually recommended by a distinguished club, committee or sponsored by an established member of elite society. These are elaborate formal affairs and involve not only “debs” but junior debutantes, escorts and so on.

Annual Debutante Presentation Overview:

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, Beta Rho Sigma Chapter started presenting young ladies in this Rites of Passage in 1964 based the vision of program founders the late Soror Ernyestne Thatch-Henry and Soror Dr. Mary Boston. From its inception to current date, Beta Rho Sigma has presented over 964 young women to Colorado’s polite and fashionable society. Our selected Debs are chosen based on recommendations from upstanding members of the community and based on their scholastic and community service accomplishments.

They represent high schools from all across the metro area. The young ladies are asked to participate in workshops, community service projects and fund-raiser to supplement cost. Closer to the Presentation the Debs, accompanied by their escorts will attend weekly rehearsals in preparation for their grand debut. Each year, parents, family, friends, and guests are invited to experience this beautiful affair and to look on as the young adults demonstrate their poise and showcase their many accomplishments.
